In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces reportedly used long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. The attack was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military command.
Details of the Strike and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks another instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles against objectives on Russian soil.
Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the main providers of petrol products in Russia's south and is directly involved in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a really good conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “There are some new ideas on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it concerns formats, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
In a parallel internal matter, a court in Russia has convicted a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
This case reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Situation
Russian authorities indicated it is in contact with French authorities concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.
An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.

The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while many civilians were sheltering in its basement, is scheduled to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.
