Two Individuals Arrested Regarding Mobile Device Hidden in House of Commons to Allegedly Broadcast Inappropriate Sounds During PMQs

Police have taken into custody a duo of individuals related to a mobile phone found hidden within the parliamentary chamber, which was allegedly designed to play sex noises during the weekly parliamentary session.

Finding and Probe

The device was uncovered near the frontbench during a standard security check of the chamber. It is believed it was planned to disrupt the keynote weekly showdown between political leaders in September.

An official spokesperson commented, “Around mid-morning on Wednesday 3 September, a device was found while conducting a standard inspection of the parliamentary hall.”

Arrests and Allegations

Investigations led officers to believe that the phone was purposely placed in a spot with the intention of creating interference to business in the house.

  • An individual in his thirties was detained on Friday 5 September on suspected grounds of attempting to deliberately cause a public nuisance.
  • A second person in his 60s was arrested on the following Tuesday on suspicion of the same offence.
  • Both have been released on bail to appear at a future time.

Security Measures and Impact

Heightened precautions were introduced in the House of Commons after the device was discovered. Audio tours and guided tours were cancelled, and there was reduced access to the Commons chamber.

The House of Lords followed suit to reduce access to the Lords Chamber “for safety reasons.”

Officials added, “Investigations remain ongoing, and we are updating the parliamentary officials up to date with our investigation.”

Gravity of the Incident

The event is being treated seriously as it represents a significant violation of parliamentary security. This device was located while numerous guards based in the parliamentary area were on industrial action over pay and conditions.

Consequently, visitors were banned from the legislative grounds. The union stated that the strike proceeded due to cutbacks in holiday time, stagnant pay, and an ethnicity pay gap.
