This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
