The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
