The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
