The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the need to directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain within me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he hails from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
