The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever stopped the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
âI'm doing what they were prevented from doing,â Mr. Cohen commented in a cooking set. âI'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.â
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which match those of the Palestinian flag â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that âMy partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
âMy conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
