The East African nation Receives Historic Treasures After a 100-Year Residence in Germany
Around 12 historical artefacts were formally given back to the Ethiopian nation after staying by a household from Germany for in excess of ten decades.
These treasures, originally collected in the early twentieth century by Germany's diplomat to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were delivered on midweek to the research center at the capital's university.
This set featured headpieces, protective shields and paintings, each regarded as historically important in the nation.
"These items still stand as a mark of the lasting and positive connection between the German nation and Ethiopia," remarked Ferdinand von Weyhe, Germany's ambassador to the East African country.
Dr. a professor, whose father was born during the household's assignment in Ethiopia, handed over the objects at a event witnessed by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the household's aim to restore the treasures was to "share their appeal with the people and preserve the heritage and past tied to my father's origin."
These items were either considered presents or acquisitions, according to the relatives.
"I want to express gratitude to the Weiss household for concretely showing their deep appreciation for Ethiopia by diligently maintaining these artifacts and importantly guaranteeing their repatriation to their legitimate homeland," said the official.
She continued that the items would soon be opened to the general audience for study and educational purposes, terming the action a milestone in preserving Ethiopia's historical legacy.
"Actions will continue to bring back old artifacts that are held in the custody of collectors and entities throughout the globe," she stated.
In the era of colonialism in Africa, many of historical objects were plundered.
This request by nations in Africa for the restoration of stolen items has been met with certain success in recent years - though some items are just on loan.
In the year 2022, the German government was the initial country to return a selection of the well-known historical items to Nigeria in a bid to address its "complex legacy."
