The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
