A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason of the attack remains unclear and no arrests have been made, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Authorities indicated that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a building near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, it was reported.

"The report indicates the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report said.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were found at the scene.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," she said.
"It is clear he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a devastating blow."

She appealed to the public to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.

In a statement, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
