Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Continuous Oil Deliveries to India in Snub of Washington Sanctions

During a unambiguous signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to maintain “uninterrupted” supplies of crude oil to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in New Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Message For the United States

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its close links with Moscow. The backdrop comes after earlier Washington's moves, notably the introduction of import duties targeting New Delhi because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a reliable source of oil and gas and all necessary for the advancement of India’s economy,” he remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, without referencing crude explicitly, supported the focus by noting that “energy security has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia alliance.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Prior to the talks, during a media interview, Putin had challenged US interference regarding India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “When Washington has the right to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival represented his maiden trip to India since the start of the war in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a clear show to demonstrate that the friendship between the men persisted strongly.

An Unusual Greeting

Employing an unusual gesture, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders shared a warm hug akin to close allies before having a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

Friday's talks yielded multiple significant pacts regarding defence and trade relations. A major outcome was the completion of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which sets a goal to boost bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the end of the decade.

Furthermore pledged to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia remains India's largest supplier of weapons, this role has diminished in recent years as India works to widen its supply base.

The joint statement stressed an agreement on the co-development of cutting-edge defence platforms, even if explicit details of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, Russia and India reiterated that in the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to outside forces.”
