Rory McIlroy salutes Spoty triumph with double honors.
Just prior to he was crowned, a anxious worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was concerned, "Not a racing champion again."
"It's been a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can build upon that."
On this occasion, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The verdict was uncontested, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were named the top squad.
A Whirlwind Schedule
Instead of opting to attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to Miami.
"It's been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of downtime over Christmas."
Hunger for More
However, McIlroy insisted he has no intention to become complacent, even after completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a few good years in me," he remarked.
"Further big titles, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But as long as you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the essential part."
Squad Celebration
At the same time, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the collective trophy, also praised golf's stellar night and his great friend's award.
"These become the times that will stay with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is truly special," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he is so worthy so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood grinned before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Future Goals
His goal is to secure his first major next year but he recognized McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to work on," the 34-year-old said.
Football Loyalty
Before McIlroy left, a last query came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?
"As long as they stop conceding so many goals on their own pitch," McIlroy responded with a smile. "There is progress. There's a hint of positivity around."
After a remarkable year, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the bright side.
