New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a âsnake and a liarâ and accusing him of having âa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.â Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.
âIt's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this race is,â the mayor stated.
Adams continued, âResidents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and Iâm going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.â
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines internationally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would refuse Adamsâs endorsement if extended.
Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adamsâs cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, âAndrew and I will appear together later today.â
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
