National Guardsman Healing Following Being Shot in Washington DC

A member of the National Guard is on the mend after he was critically injured in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.

The family of Andrew Wolfe, 24, report "his head wound is slowly healing and that he's starting to 'look more like himself,'" stated West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey.

The family anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in acute care for the coming fortnight, and they feel optimistic about his recovery, said the governor.

The serviceman was one of two state guardsmen injured by gunfire when a gunman began shooting not far from the presidential residence on November 26th. His fellow guardsmember, twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries.

"Our request remains for all state residents and the nation's citizens for their thoughts and prayers!" the governor said.

Morrisey was present at a vigil on Friday evening for the injured soldier at a local secondary school in his hometown, where the guardsman was once a pupil.

A pastor at the vigil read a message from the soldier's parents, his family.

"It is clear to us that there is a long road to go," they expressed, according to local news outlet Metro News.

"But our faith keeps us hopeful. We remain thankful for the well-wishes and the support from people all over the globe."

Earlier in the week, the state official said the serviceman had responded to a nurse with a positive gesture and was capable of move his toes.

Law enforcement have formally accused the alleged gunman, an Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Prior to his arrival to the US in 2021, he was once a counterterrorism soldier in a CIA-backed unit that worked with US forces in the South Asian nation.

Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of two thousand National Guard members whom President Donald Trump deployed to the Washington DC in last summer as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in Democratic-led cities.

Following the incident, Trump said he wanted an additional five hundred military personnel deployed to the nation's capital.

The Trump administration has also cited the shooting as a justification for further immigration crackdown measures.

They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from 19 countries that were part of a travel ban announced over the recent season, among them the suspect's home country.
