Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He contested justice and justice triumphed.

Two months subsequent to getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated plotter – who has been under residential detention in his residence while a number of court processes and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, during growing speculation that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the conservative ex- military man showed scant sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to provide those scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Destination Discussion

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an seeming bid to dissuade the high court from sending him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the last presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing forty prisoners: “That is virtually one square metre per prisoner.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the horrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's expected imprisonment.

Penning in a major daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of countless people in Brazil,” he stated.

Mixed General Reaction

It is possibly correct given the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his predicted incarceration has also pleased the feelings of many others who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for plotting to prevent his successor from assuming office – and even scheming to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the incumbent president's allied group, commented: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain dignified care – but respectful treatment in prison. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years celebrating the tough handling of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights are not for lawbreakers – chosen to tour a jail to discover what situations are truly like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 detainees, his more likely destination seems to be a nearby jail for officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the impressive official residence, around a short distance away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a TV and also a minibar in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report suggested.

Ideological Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the speculated proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his outcome in the {
