Iconic Singer Barry Manilow to Undergo Surgery for a Lung Cancer Diagnosis.
Barry Manilow has revealed that he was diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will undergo a surgical procedure.
Spot Found in Initial Phase
The 82-year-old singer, known for a string of beloved anthems from "I Write the Songs" cemented his status as one of pop musicâs cherished performers, will have a procedure to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to fight off the condition, which is detected early.
âAs my fans are aware, I recently went through six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
âAlthough I was recovered from the illness and back on stage in Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor requested an MRI just to be certain that all was clear.
âThe MRI identified a cancerous spot on my lung that needs to be removed. Itâs incredible chance (and a fantastic physician) that it was discovered so early.â
Concert Delays
He has rescheduled a string of forthcoming concerts, but suggested he would be on stage again by Valentineâs Day for his long-running concert series at his Vegas home.
He went on to say: âThe medical team do not believe it has spread and Iâm undergoing further tests to support their conclusion. So, thatâs it. Chemo is not needed. No radiotherapy. Just chicken soup and classic TV.
âIâm counting the days until I rejoin my second home in Las Vegas for our February love-themed shows.â
A Long Career and Personal Life
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series on the Las Vegas Strip. The singer has spent decades in the public eye and publicly identified as gay in 2017, after marrying his partner of many years, Garry Kief confidentially in 2014.
The couple were in a discreet relationship for more than 35 years. In 2023, Manilow spoke about how important his partner had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
âWhen my fame skyrocketed, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of trouble if you, you know, youâre alone repeatedly,â he said.
âBut I met Garry right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to share joys with.
âI hope that aspiring artists donât have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was fun.â
