I believed I nicked it - Alex Carey on overturned decision.
Australia gloveman Alex Carey admitted he thought he had nicked the ball when he was overturned on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against England.
Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to aid the Australians reach 326-8 at the end of play in Adelaide.
The Key Moment
Australia were 245-6 when Carey went for a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
England were convinced they had a wicket, certain they had heard an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
After skipper Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike although this came prior to the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney also said he believed there was a clearance between bat and ball.
Consequently, Carey was reprieved.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," stated Carey.
"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."
Technology Debate
There has been debate about 'Snicko'' during the Ashes contest after a several inconclusive moments.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may escalate this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is."
A Special Hundred
Carey's century was his maiden in Ashes cricket.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.
"The reason for my look upwards is clear. It's hard not to get emotional. But, no, it was great."
History of Controversy
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a heated final day.
On his reprieve he continued: "The sound wave didn't match up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"I might have gotten away with one."
