Harsh Winter Weather Systems Take 5 Victims in the Gaza Strip Amid Dire Conditions in Temporary Shelters.
Strong cold-season winds brought walls down upon fragile tents housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. This tragedy highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and severe shortages of aid.
Truce Offers No Relief from Harsh Weather
While a ceasefire has been active since October, humanitarian organizations report that residents broadly lack the adequate housing required to survive recurring winter storms.
Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, reported on Tuesday that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.
In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold during the night.
"International actors has allowed us to experience loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member after the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."
Family Crushed in Tent Collapse
As per the medical center, three members of a one household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than five others were hurt in the event.
Their relatives on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.
Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Crisis
The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.
Most of Palestinians reside in makeshift tents since their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.
Fatality Figures After the Truce
Local health authorities, part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals since the ceasefire began. The authority keeps comprehensive casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.
James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 minors under the age of 18 – sixty boys and forty girls – had been killed since the ceasefire started due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he said, reflected cases where enough information had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been injured.
"While 'explosions and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.
Another Winter of Struggle
Gaza’s population of over 2 million individuals has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently required during the winter months. This marks the 3rd cold season since the war between Israel and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.
