England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The England national team will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they achieve the expected entry for a championship taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the Three Lions for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
England are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would be held at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Rally
The event was launched at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the venue by around fifty protesters, who demanded the Israeli team to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.
Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from next season, will cater to families and help reach a wider spectrum of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at the national stadium of each host.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“The event will be a championship for the fans and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its emotion and capacity to bring people together.”
In excess of three million passes, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be offered to fans.
