Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in defense or security roles.
"Like us, you all made an oath to defend and support this national charter," the representatives declared in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that violate the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a angry response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified declaration censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged social media posts and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Officials' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this United States and made an oath to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
White House Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official declared. "There are active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can result in disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
