Catherine's Yearly Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as award-winning actors.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
