Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest soon to address the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting Trump had urged him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before rumors that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
